Title

13 April 1910: Australian Labor Party Elected To Majority Government For The First Time

Subject

A composite image comprised of small oval portraits depicting members of the Australian Labor Party government in 1910.

Description

The Labor government of 1910 was not only the first time that the Labor Party, the political wing of the labour movement, born in the Melbourne Trades Hall, had a majority in the lower house of Australia, but also the first majority of any party in the Australian Senate, the first time any labour party in the world had held majority government, and the first time any labour party had controlled both houses of a bicameral legislature. The Fisher government undertook unprecedented reforms, passing legislation at a rate unmatched until the 1940s. This government could be considered the culmination of the rise of Labor in Australian politics.
